Data collection: Data for the NRIS were gathered through the use of an online survey accessible online through SurveyMonkey. PDF versions of the survey can be found here for the CFI Michigan sample, and here for the CFI International sample. Measures: - Beliefs: Participants identified their beliefs in a number of ways. They were able to select multiple labels for their beliefs (e.g., atheist, agnostic, theist, religious), and were also forced to select a single label that best described their beliefs from the same set of categories.
- Personality: Assessed using the Five Factor Model. FFM measures dimensions of extraversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness, neuroticism (operationalized here as inverse stability), and openness to experience. All items drawn from the International Personality Item Pool.
- Social Support: Perceived social support measured using Cutrona & Russell's Social Provisions Scale. Social network size and attendance at social functions related to beliefs (e.g. church, philosophical meetings) were also measured and related to support.
- Well-being: Subjective well-being was assessed using Diener and colleagues' Satisfaction with Life Scale.
